Tallulah Gorge State Park is located in the town of Tallulah Falls, Georgia and managed jointly by the State Parks and Georgia Power Company. The Tallulah River flows through the 600 foot deep gorge. In its almost two mile trip through the gorge from the bottom of the Tallulah Lake Dam to Tugaloo Lake the river flows over five major falls; L'Eau d'Or (46'), Tempesta (76'), Hurricane (96'), Oceana (50') and Bridal Veil (17'). A loop trail of 3 miles provides access to several overlooks where one can observe all but Bridal Veil Falls. The loop trail includes steps which descend to a swinging bridge (opened in 2002) spanning the gorge within 85 feet of the gorge floor. Steps climb back to the rim on the other side and the loop can be completed by walking over the Tallulah Lake Dam. Before the Tallulah River was dammed in 1913 to generate power, as much a 10 times the amount of water ran through the gorge as it currently does. The first two weekends in April and the first three weekends in November whitewater boating releases are scheduled - 500 cfs on Saturday and 700 cfs on Sunday compared to the normal 50 cfs. GPS and Topo Data - The image below shows Hurricane Falls during one of the November 700 cfs water releases allowing those with whitewater skills to run the lower falls and rapids. Canoes and kayaks access the water below Hurricane falls to run Oceana and Bridal Veil Falls and rapids for over a mile to the Tugaloo Lake. |
